Video communication, from “nice to have ” to a “must have!”

In the past few months many people were forced to suddenly communicate and collaborate at a distance. This hasn’t been a slow change, but a sudden shift that sometimes happened within days. And this new way of communicating is not going away anytime soon. How did you, before the COVID-19 pandemic, communicate with others? Was it one-way traffic, an interaction, live or maybe even asynchronous? And did you ever stop to think about video communication during that time?

Probably in a lot of different ways, right?

At the start of the pandemic, most people and companies moved to live video communication tools like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet and Skype to keep communicating and collaborating at a distance.

What’s interesting is that all these video communication tools were readily available on all of our devices for many years, but we never felt the need to use it – they were simply nice to have. Now that we can’t communicate face to face anymore, video has turned into the “go to” communication resource – a must-have.

After a few months of using video to communicate, many people are realizing that it is much more convenient and saves you a lot of valuable time. Nevertheless, doing all communication via live video calls has also created the phrase “video call burnout”. Video calls take up a lot of time (scheduling and attending) and can drain your energy.

Is it always necessary to communicate live with video?

In a lot of cases you just want to get answers to certain questions. What if you could communicate over video, but asynchronously? By this, I mean you create questions in your own time, letting the recipient answer the questions in their own time and giving you the possibility to review the answers in your own time again (e.g. together with colleagues). Sounds interesting, right?

What possibilities do you have?

There are multiple ways to use video communication asynchronously in your recruitment process. Below you will find an infographic showing you the different possibilities. Each of these options can be either one or two-way video traffic.

Two-way video means you can also create the question(s) in video. This makes communicating much more personal and comes as close as you can to live communication. On the other hand, in some cases you just want to receive a video answer from someone. You might just want to give applicants the option to show their motivation when they apply for a job. In this case one-way asynchronous video communication could be an option.

How does it add the most value to your daily work?

Video communication can’t be applied as a one size fits all solution to all recruitment processes. Video as a resource can be used in different ways, depending on your goals:

  • Do you want to enrich your candidate journey? A video motivation option next to the traditional cover letter can be a good start.
  • Are you looking to reduce time spent on hiring? Think about eliminating the time-consuming phone intake and replace it with a very personal two-way video questionnaire in which you ask a few questions.
  • Do you want to prevent biased decisions and boost diversity? Make sure you review candidates with multiple people by sharing the submitted answers with multiple people.
